If you’ve been in Sitges over the past few days then no doubt, you are enjoying the May-like weather we’ve been experiencing. Spare a thought for those in the Uk, Ireland and Northern Europe who have been hit with torential flodding.

For those of you who haven’t heard, Marypili, Sitges Lesbian and gay bar has been sold. The girls, are moving to Manchester and we at Gay Sitges Guide wish them the very best.

The “Going Away” party will take place on the 9th of January! In the mean time you can still enjoy drinks on the terrace in the Winter sun as well as the unique atmosphere that makes Marypili special. The bar will remain in gay ownership. We will keep you updated.

“MONROES UP FOR SALE?” – Monroes restaurant is not up for sale, Pablo and Ben will be closing down for the winter months and having a well deserved rest, Doing some traveling and a very long holiday to Thailand.

The current location of the restaurant will be changing as their landlords of the restaurant space have decided to sell it since their contract with Monroes terminates at the end of October. This doesn’t mean that Monroes is disappearing from the “Sitges Scene” just its current “location”.

We at Gay Sitges Guide wish them very well in their new venture. As with everything they do, we are sure it will be a sparkling success. And as we know more, you will be the first to know what really is happening!

Don Facundo Bacardí Massó was one of Sitges’ most distinguished citizens, as the founder of Bacardi.

His great-great grandson Facundo Bacardi, the Bacardi chairman, joined Sitges Mayor Jordi Baijet to honour his memory with the unveiling of a statue celebrating his life, success, and connections to Sitges.

Mr. Massó was a merchant born and raised in Sitges who emigrated to Santiago de Cuba in 1830. In 1862, he revolutionised the spirits world with the creation of Bacardi rum, the world’s first light bodied and mixable rum.

The Sitges-inspired sculpture by artist Lorenzo Quinn is entitled “Looking into the Future” and will become a permanent fixture on the town’s seaside promenade, the Paseo Marítimo.

The one-of-a-kind work has a base of solid stone; on top of which is a large steel circle held up by open hands made of bronze and the Bat, the globally recognised symbol of Bacardi, also known symbol of good luck, fortune and family unity.

The base has an embedded plaque with a portrait and explanation of the life and vision of Mr. Massó.

Mr. Quinn created the sculpture using stone from Sitges. The circle symbolises the global dimensions of the brand and the company. The open hands reaching for the sky symbolise letting dreams take flight, with the confidence to succeed.

After several months of planning, Lonely Planet Television arrived in Sitges and filmed the town from a “Gay Perspective”.

We had Pablo, aka Lady Diamond show them the best sights and sounds of Sitges, giving the world his unique experience on Sitges.

The show will be aired in the US on Discovery networks and The Travel Channel within the next 3 months, it then makes its way to the UK 3 months later. It arrives in Spain in just under a years time.

The show is watched by millions of viewers worldwide so it should bring Sitges the attention it deserves and we were more than happy to help make it happen.
