The Patron Saint of Barcelona is celebrated in true Catalan Fashion, with fireworks and cava flowing through the streets of every town in the province.
Although it is mainly a Barcelona based event, recently a lot of straight boys seem to want to venture out from the big city to Sitges to terrorise all of the queens here! Well, not terrorise exactly, but you will find yourself at the end of a couple of firecrackers very easily.
The view over the mountains towards Barcelona is truly spectacular as you can see the fireworks explode all down the Costa Garraf.
The celebration marks the true start of Summer for the Catalans. In Sitges, it is also the time where every night feels like a Saturday night... season is well underway and the days and nights start to get even hotter.
Date Confusion???
Don't be worried, just remember, the Spanish start celebrating an event, be it a birthday, national holiday or other celebration the night before, starting at 12am.
Midsummer Day is based on the ancient custom of burning useless objects to celebrate the summer solstice, and is connected with the feast day of St John the Baptist.
Midsummer Day is Jun 24, St John the Baptist's Day (Not to be confused with midsummer, which is lower case), Midsummer's Eve is the night before Jun 23-24. The summer solstice is on Jun 21.
