About the Festival
Fiesta Mayor is when the town of Sitges hosts its annual festival in celebration of the patron saint, Sant Bartolomeu.
The Fiesta Mayor includes music, dance and parades, including a spectacular firework display which can be seen from all over the town, or, if you are lucky enough to own
a boat, from out at sea.
If you intend to take part in the festivities, it is wise to wear a hat and sunglasses to avoid the sparks...yes sparks....The whole even resembles New Year's eve in Amsterdam. (Those who have been there will know what I mean). Firecrackers are lit off left, right and centre with most emanating from the large dragon's mouth. Beware though, as this Dragon has been know to chase people right down the narrow streets of Sitges! Great fun to watch.
The acrobatics on the street is simply superb. The Castellers will often reach 4 stories high (that's a 6 person-high, human tower). People gather around them to form a human safety net. Sometimes they fall, but most of the time they perform spectacular shows that will take your breath away.
A small little child always winds up at the top. Depending on how good they are they can last for several seconds to a few minutes. Be sure to show your appreciation when they finish!
